Rights Revolution: 1968 Olympics

Two American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos both ran the 200-meter final in the 1968 Olympic Games, held in Mexico City. These games were amid the time of the Civil Rights Movement and this sign of protest shown in the image above became known as the "Black Salute". Later, Smith and Carlos were removed from these games due to their controversial silent protest during "The Star-Spangled Banner" after their 1st and 3rd place victories (Anderson, 61).
